Animal-loving sociopaths
I recently had the “pleasure” of finally seeing Jurassic Park II and found it to be a movie about a group of sociopaths (the good guys) whose actions cause the deaths of dozens and dozens of humans simply to save the life of a single animal, who isn’t even the last of its kind.
One of them removes the bullets from the gun of a hunter so that when a t-rex attacks their camp and the hunter raises his gun to shoot it, the gun goes “click” and a shitload of people die as a direct result. This protector of Mother Earth is rather proud of his achievement later and none of the good guys seem to mind.
Near the end of the film the t-rex goes on a rampage in some United States city and instead of shooting the animal, the good guys decide to go on a road trip to get the t-rex’s baby so as to lure the big lizard to a ship’s cargo hold. This decision ends up costing the lives of dozens of city dwellers, including one unfortunate guy played by the screenwriter himself.
It’s not just this film. Find some popular clip on YouTube showing cruelty towards animals and you’re bound to find an endless stream of death threats in the comments.
I should not have to add a disclaimer here saying that I, too, care about animals. I’m not trying to justify cruelty towards animals, though I do enjoy the tasty ones every now and then. It just bugs me how an animal’s life has a much higher value in our culture than a human life.
Ekspordikeeluga Ferraritehas kruusateedega riigis
Mul on vaja homseks kokku panna mõned leheküljed teksti. Tekst ise on õnneks suuresti valmis, nii et kirjutamist on vähe teha, kuid… klaviatuur läks katki. Lihtsalt ei tööta enam.
Noh, ikka juhtub. Kuna tihti on kombeks arvuti ees süüa-juua, siis ega ükski klaviatuur üle aasta pole kestnud. Läksin poodi uut ostma. Pühapäev, seega seadsin sammud Viru keskuse tehnikaosakonda. Valik oli suur — lausa kaks kapitäit ja kümned eri mudelid — kuid mida polnud oli eesti layoutiga klaviatuur. Soomet oli, Rootsit oli, isegi kirillitsat täis klaviatuure oli ohtralt. Eestit polnud.
Palusin müüja appi ning selgus, et siiski-siiski, üks Eesti layoutiga klaviatuur eksisteerib. Mingi imepisike 150-kroonine Trusti käkk, mille slimline layout kindlasti ühelegi standardile ei vasta. Tegu oli ainukese klaviatuuriga, kus kõik Eesti tähed peal.
Deadline kukil, pidin klaviatuuri ära ostma. Pühapäeval niikuinii miskit muud lahti ei ole. Nüüd siis üritan sellega hakkama saada.
Backspace on tavanupu suurune, tavanupud on pisemad kui minu iidsel sülearvutil, enter on pooleteise nupu laiune ristkülik, “<” ja “>” nupp asub spacebarist vasakul ja kõik nupud on üksteise otsa kokku aetud nii, et peale vaadates ei ole visuaalselt mingeid gruppe võimalik eristada.
Eesti layoutiga klaviatuuride puudus ei ole mingi uus probleem. Eelmise kahe klaviatuuri ostmisel oli täpselt sama jama: poes olevatest umbes 20 eri mudelist oli eestikeelne ainukesena mingi hale odav käkk. Korralikku eestikeelset klaviatuuri pole ma viimased poolteist aastat poest leidnud.
Eesti kui eesrindlik e-riik valab igal aastal miljoneid kroone igasugustesse lahedatesse tarkvaraprojektidesse, kuid pole korralikke eestikeelseid klaviatuure, millega neid teenuseid kasutada. Sama mõttekas oleks ehitada Ferraritehas kruusateedega riiki ja keelata autode eksport nagu e-riigi tarvis arendatud tarkvaraga on tehtud. (Loe juunikuu Arvutimaailmast.)
Mul on mõte kuidas probleemi lahendada.
Kuna enamus praegust ja tulevast tööd on seotud kursavennaga asutatud OÜ-ga ja turg suuresti väljaspool Eestit, tuleks firmasiseseks suhtluskeeleks võtta inglise keel. Korralikke USA layoutiga klaviatuure on ka Eestis päris lihtne leida. See tähendaks, et kõik dokumentatsioon, lepingud jmt oleks inglise keeles. Ka teiste kohalike firmadega suheldes.
Boonusena vähendaks selline poliitika igasuguseid segadusi, kuna universaalselt oleks võimalik kasutada ingliskeelseid termineid ja ei peaks pead vaevama eestikeelse arvutiterminoloogiaga.
Kvaliteetsete klaviatuuride olemasolu tõstaks töötajate produktiivsust. Firma ekspordivõime suureneks kuna nii siinpool kui ka sealpool piiri oleks võimalik kasutada samu dokumente, samu blankette.
Inglise keel kui suhtluskeel tähendaks seda, et oleks võimalik kasutada seadmeid ja tarkvara, millel puudub korralik eesti keele tugi: näiteks kasvõi Apple’i iPhone. Ja päris kindlasti võib eeldada, et kõik meie potentsiaalsed äripartnerid Eestis oskavad suurepäraselt inglise keelt.
Hmmm… Kui järgi mõelda siis eesti keele kasutamisel pole tõesti absoluutselt mitte mingisuguseid eeliseid. Ja jumal tänatud. Sest ainuke võimalus eesti keelt arvutiga suhtlemisel kasutada on mingi 150-kroonine käkk-klaviatuur ja praegune on tõesti hullem kui kõik teised klaviatuurid, mida ma oma elus kasutanud olen. I Love Microsoft
Recently the Swedish parliament voted to allow the interception of all network traffic that crosses Swedish borders. Since Finland and Estonia mostly route their network traffic through Stockholm, this means, among other things, that the e-mails you send from or to any of these three countries will be logged and data-mined by the Swedish equivalent of CIA. This breach in privacy is not limited to e-mails, but also affects instant messaging, voice over internet, and even simple web browsing.
Clearly if you’re running a business and are unable to use end-to-end encryption, you should not be working with Estonian, Swedish, or Finnish companies. The Swedish Pirate Party will be shouting loud enough in the near future to guarantee you bad PR and angry customers.
This erosion of privacy and civil rights was taken to a new level recently when the European Parliament Member Marianne Mikko (from Estonia!) proposed to create a “blogger registry” to force anonymous and semi-anonymous bloggers to come out of the closet. Surprisingly it seems her proposal used wording similar to the controversial Swedish law.
So we’ve established that privacy and anonymity are two things under fire from politicians everywhere.
Quiz time. Which company has some of the biggest databases in the world, the know-how to effectively mine them, and services designed to encourage you to store as much of your life on their servers as possible? Google.
Who is the arch-nemesis of Google? Microsoft.
And it seems that Microsoft has replaced flying chairs with a far more effective weapon: privacy issues. With Steve Ballmer recently saying about the Google browser toolbar:
Why is that toolbar there? Do you think it is there to help you? No. It is there to report data about everything you do on your PC. I am not trying to say this is nefarious or bad, I am just saying being clear is probably the most important thing. And any user can say, “This is clear and this is OK with me.”
Suddenly it has become profitable for Microsoft to fight for people’s right to privacy.
This is a good thing. Corporate greed pushing them to fight for civil rights. Good old capitalism in action.
Hopefully we’ll see more privacy talk from Microsoft in the near future.
